Here are some examples of the work we’ve done with retailers, distributors, and producers.
Work Sample 1: Retail Membership, Nugget Markets
Nugget Markets, a nine-store supermarket chain in the greater Sacramento, CA area, has been a FishWise member retailer since 2006. Nugget was recently recognized as being in the top 10 of Fortune Magazine’s Top 100 Places To Work, and as one of three Outstanding Markets in the Nation by Progressive Grocer. In order to help Nugget better demonstrate their commitment to both sustainability and outstanding quality in their seafood department, FishWise has:
- Assessed and color-coded their entire seafood inventory according to sustainability criteria resulting in a shift of consumer choices from red to green products, while increasing overall sales.
- Aided in sourcing a greater variety of sustainable seafood products at affordable price points.
- Facilitated staff training and provided point-of-sale informational material to ensure customer engagement in, and understanding of, sustainable seafood, resulting in increased loyalty.
- Promoted Nugget’s achievements in their commitment to sustainable seafood, resulting in national recognition as a Green Seafood Retailer by Greenpeace.
“FishWise is a well-run program, tailored to our needs. We work with them to maintain strong sales, while also doing our part as a company to ensure there will be fish to sell in the future.”
– Angel Nolasco, Director of Meat and Seafood, Nugget Markets.
Work Sample 2: Distributor Partnership, Central Coast Seafood
Central Coast Seafood, based out of Atascadero, CA, is one of the most rapidly growing seafood distributors in California. The owner, Giovanni Comin, is dedicated to conserving not just our marine resources, but the livelihoods of the fishing communities in Central California as well. FishWise has partnered with Central Coast Seafood to create a unique and dynamic relationship that has earned Central Coast increased revenues, new market share, and admiration from both the industry and the environmental community.
To promote Central Coast, FishWise has:
- Helped Central Coast seafood to eliminate many unsustainable products and transition to a more environmentally friendly inventory.
- Increased Central Coast’s overall profits through media support and retailer introduction.
- Provided strong science to allow for higher degrees of transparency in the chain of custody.
- Developed long-term “Road Maps” that help Central Coast wean itself off of unsustainable products which replacing them with profitable, sustainable items.
- Advertised Central Coast’s efforts in the media, among other NGOs, and in industry publications, earning the company top honors as a sustainable distributor in Seafood Business Magazine.
“Central Coast Seafood has long been a supporter of sustainable seafood and responsible environmental business practices. Being actively involved in the fisheries reform project that has taken place in Morro Bay, we’ve had firsthand experience in the need for responsible fisheries management to ensure the health and longevity of our local fish for generations to come. To broaden our company focus beyond local product to our entire product line, it became quickly apparent that we’d be best served to enlist additional outside expertise to ensure a transition that was both effective and accurate. Accessibility and willingness to educate were important factors as well. To that end we found that FishWise was best equipped as an experienced industry insider to help deal with the complexity and ever-changing status of both wild caught and farm raised products. Our partnership with FishWise has been key in developing a sustainability program based on honesty and integrity; one that our customers look for and understand, and that helps Central Coast Seafood access new markets for increased revenues.”
– Giovanni Comin, President, Central Coast Seafood
