NFI & GS1 Seafood Traceability for Seafood: U.S. Implementation Guide

Created on Friday, 15 May 2015

The National Fisheries Institute (NFI) and GS1 U.S. published a 53-page document in 2011 that includes minimum requirements and best-practice recommendations for how the U.S. seafood industry can improve traceability throughout seafood supply chains. The Guide applies to all levels of product hierarchy and is designed to be a resource for all U.S. distribution channels – from producers and processors, through middle of the supply chain businesses, to the retailer and foodservice sectors.

The seafood industry is continuing to evolve to meet consumer needs. As noted in the report’s introduction, “Consumers today are much more knowledgeable and demanding about the foods they purchase. The increased focus on food safety and consumer awareness raises the need to identify and adopt business practices and standards that will aid the Seafood Distribution Channel Participant’s ability to track and trace product throughout the supply chain.”
